Core formulas
1 Combined rating – Start at 100 % efficiency. After each percentage p, multiply remaining efficiency by (1 – p).
Example for 70 %, 10 %, 10 %:
$$100\% \times (1-0.70)=30\%$$ $$30\% \times (1-0.10)=27\%$$ $$27\% \times (1-0.10)=24.3\%$$ Combined rating: $$100\% – 24.3\% = 75.7\% \rightarrow 80\% \text{ (rounded)}$$
2 Monthly pay – Look up the base rate for the rounded rating, then add dependent allowances.
- 80 % base pay 2024: $2,506.05 (single veteran) (VA.gov, 2024).
- One child <18: +$98.
Total for the example: $$2,506.05 + 98 = 2,604.05$$ per month.

FAQ
How does the calculator combine multiple ratings?
It multiplies remaining “healthy” efficiency after each condition, then subtracts from 100 %. VA codified this in 38 CFR §4.25, calling it the “whole-person theory” (GovInfo, 2023).
Why do my inputs round to the nearest 10 %?
VA policy requires rounding to the closest 10 % to align with published pay tables; 5 % or more rounds up (VA.gov pay table notes, 2024).
Does the tool include Special Monthly Compensation (SMC)?
No. It returns standard compensation only. SMC adds separate amounts for severe disabilities like loss of limb (38 U.S.C. §1114).
Can I mirror bilateral factor calculations here?
Not directly. You must pre-adjust the affected limb ratings by adding the bilateral factor, then enter the new percentages (M21-1, 2023).
How current are the rates used?
The back-end pulls the latest VA pay table each December after the annual COLA announcement; 2024 data reflect the 3.2 % increase (SSA.gov, 2023).
Is my data stored?
Form data travel to the server only to compute results and are not retained in the database, meeting VA privacy guidance (VA Privacy Policy, 2023).
Can I export the output?
Use the in-page “Copy” link, then paste into any document or your VA representative’s email.
Who should use Aid & Attendance?
Choose it when your spouse needs help with daily living tasks documented by a physician; VA Form 21-2680 verifies eligibility (VA.gov, 2022).
